When It’s All Too Much: A Hebrew Prayer

The following is a traditional Hebrew prayer typically said during morning prayers. It is also recited when encountering things beyond one’s control or comprehension.

As we perceive that things are not the way they should be; As our concern for all of creation grows; As it becomes increasingly difficult to empty ourselves of worry and sadness at what we have done: may we find comfort in the God who began it all and is still creating everything.

Transliteration (left to right)

Barukh ‘atah ‘Adonai ‘Eloheinu melekh ha’olam
yotser ‘or uvorei choshekh,
‘oseh shalom uvorei ‘et hakkol

Translation

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe
Who fashions light and creates darkness,
who makes peace and creates everything.
